My Story

The Artist Behind Amy Elizabeth Artwork

I always wanted to be an artist, even at a young age, but had no idea what that even meant. I only knew that I loved to create with color, shapes, and clean lines.

After studying art in college, I began a graphic design career in Dallas, Texas.  My husband Jeff, also an artist, began teaching art in the school system. Then life changed again, and I became a mom, and decided to stay at home with our growing family. I continued to use my creativity with art projects for our home, scrapbooking our family memories, designing kids parties and more.

Once our oldest child started college, I began working on my art more and more. This new phase of life with grown kids has given me an opportunity to work in art full time!

I launched AmyElizabethArtwork in 2017 with a shop on Etsy. Since then, I've been working to refine my craft and grow my business. I continue to be inspired by color and clean lines and love every day in my studio.

So, why maps?

I started painting maps specifically a few years ago and found that they are the perfect subject matter for me. Each location is so different and I enjoy finding the colors for each piece that represent that city. Maps have always been a love of mine since they reflect all the places we've been, and the towns that we call home.

As a former scrapbooking addict, I've always been interested in telling stories, marking moments in time, and capturing our family's memories. We've moved around a bit and so each town, each home, each adventure holds a part of our story.

This is where my brain was the first day I thought about maps. I remember seeing my own hometown map, of Lubbock, Texas - probably on Google - and thinking that the grid of streets created such cool shapes. I did a quick sketch and then another. I had a canvas and paint on hand, and so I started painting.

As I experimented more and more, I fine-tuned my process and added some watercolor versions. I was so excited that I'd found something that served a purpose, and used my creative skills to create something unique. Maps are a snapshot of a memory - a family vacation spot, a favorite college town, the location of our first home or where we grew up. For me, they are the perfect subject matter. Add in some fun color and design and I've found my sweet spot.

Also, let me add that I'm a bit of a perfectionist, and so the clean lines of a map and the shapes created, also make me very happy. Thanks for visiting!
